Yoga and its meaning as understood by Melissa Manuel, AYM Yoga Student.
yoga is not just a class one attends and also not exercise, but a
lifestyle and way of living. Yoga as a whole touches on every area of ones
life, from social behavior to physical health, to mental and intellectual
understanding to spiritual awareness. It is a systematic way individuals can
learn to expand their potential and take as much from life as humanly possible.
This pathway can lead us to respect life and learning, to be calm in the face
of stress, to be physical and mentally healthy, and to ultimately find
happiness. It is truly an art of living.
In today’s
modern era, the western world is obsessed with the physical form. Sadly we have
become so focused on our physical levels that we have narrowed some areas of
our life, such as educational and intellectual learning, and neglected others
completely, like emotional health and meditative practice. When people think of
yoga many picture a modern day ashtanga/vinyasa class focusing on asanas and
toning the body. However traditional yoga and yoga practice is so much more
than this. Yoga is a way of holistic living and the physical component is only
one aspect of yoga.
Yoga also has a firm foundation in scientific methodology. Because yoga is a lifestyle that leads us to become aware of our external environment, our bodies, our minds, and our spirituality, those who study and practice yoga tend to have a deeper connection with their bodies and mind. This leads to enjoying a healthy life, one that is free of disease and stress. Through yoga practice we learn to cope with external stressors that can have a major impact on our overall health and behavior. We also learn to control our bodies and minds and control energy in and surrounding ourselves. On the whole, yoga is a way of life not dictated by religion or exercise or individual yoga instructors and styles, it is an all-encompassing way to live happily and healthy, and appreciatively and morally.
